Abstract

Brian De Palma’s films have often been misinterpreted upon release, and Body Double is one of the best examples. Considered a plagiarism of various motifs taken from Alfred Hitchcock’s work and accused of being violent and sexist, the film is actually engaged in a reflective trend present throughout much of the director’s filmography. Using textual analysis, this article examines how the narrative of Body Double works at two different levels. On the first, sustained by the surface of its images and the explicit narrative anecdote that unfolds, we are faced with a thriller that follows Hollywood’s generic trends when it comes to depicting violence and eroticism. On the second, however, the connotation of all elements through different reflective strategies makes the film a critical commentary on hegemonic modes of representation and mass spectacles. Ultimately, the effects of this operation contribute to the development of a critical viewer who can become aware of audiovisual forms and their meanings.
