Hypermedia Reading and its Impact on Reading Comprehension among College Students

Abstract

The social relationships now founded on instantaneous, media-based and eminently visual communication have led society into a highly volatile and unstable scenario where the only thing that seemingly does not change are the relations of production with its structures and organizations, which sustain it in a paradigmatic framework that is increasingly technocratic. In this rapidly changing context, the field of education is one of the most affected, since technology implies enormous challenges for its proper and pedagogic implementation in the classroom. Accordingly, this study looks at whether hypermedia reading is changing the degree to which journalism students at the Universidad Autónoma del Caribe in Barranquilla remember and understand what they read.

Author Biography

Juan José Trillos-Pacheco, Universidad Autónoma del Caribe

Profesor universitario, escritor y periodista barranquillero. Ha publicado los libros de cuentos, Tanatopraxia de un disfraz (2004) y Congreso de muñecos mentirosos (2008). Cuentos suyos han sido publicados en Antologías nacionales del MEN y RENATA. En 2010 obtuvo el primer puesto en el concurso de ensayos, "Porque todos tenemos algo que escribir", de la Universidad Autónoma del Caribe. En 2011 publica el libro académico-científico, La facultad predictiva del lenguaje. Artículos académicos y periodísticos suyos han aparecido publicados en Revista Encuentros, El Heraldo y Boyacá 7 Días. Ha sido libretista de diversos programas de televisión. Ha colaborado como libretista del programa EL SURCO (Boyacá) y CORPOGUAVIO (Cundinamarca) emitidos por Señal Colombia. Ha sido profesor universitario, del SENA y otras instituciones en el área de lenguaje, medios, comunicación, periodismo, cine, televisión y literatura.
