In the Mexican context, journalists carry out their work amid an environment of constant uncertainty, marked, among other factors, by precarization. This condition not only affects them professionally and psychosocially, but also shapes news production, resulting in low-quality content and, in some cases, disinformation. Drawing on a Bourdieusian approach and 46 in-depth interviews, this article examines journalists’ perceptions of how precarious working conditions can lead to disinformation. The findings indicate that external and internal pressures, long working hours, time constraints, and excessive workloads, as components of these conditions, push journalists toward producing disinformation, particularly those who occupy lower positions within the journalistic field. Furthermore, participants tend to resist and adapt to the demands of contemporary journalism, operating within a paradox in which survival depends on doing whatever is necessary to retain their positions while complying with the rules of the field. Among these rules is the normalization of producing rushed and insufficiently vetted content, practices that, although detrimental to quality, enable both journalists and media organizations to sustain themselves.
